Inquiry on Researching Name

Post by Distant_Dragon »

Hello,

I am writing this in order to get some assistance in determining a possible name which I am trying to sort out. The information I have is:

- It is a 5 letter Italian name.
- The surname begins with L
- The other letters in the name are A - U - I (I do not know the order)
- The last missing letter is a consanant.

- I do not know when the family came to America but the man who had this surname was called Andrew, he was 21 and he served in the US Air Force in 1966.

- His location of birth is an unknown but it is likely that he was born in America since he served in the AF.

Any help in determining possible names would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Talk about a riddle..... 8O

Do we have any other clues available? Do you know which state he was in at any point in time?

Actually he was in Utah during the very early part of 1966.

That was due to being in the service though from what I have been lead to believe.

Yes it is a riddle : /

Hi Distant Dragon

Can you upload the document that has the name on it? And I just want to make sure that this is a surname that you're looking for and not a first name.

Thanks

Not from a lack of trying but I do not have a document on this at the moment. I just have a first name of Andrew and then the L with the vowels and one more consanant. : / sorry I know this isn't much.

If you let me know how to determine if this is a first name I can look into that possibility.

How about these? (From Ellis Island)

Laius
Lauio
Luia
Luiani

That's just a few. There are some longer names, perhaps there is a vowel after the last consonant?

Hi Bri,

Without much to go on except Fisher (italian word Pescatore = fisherman)
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... t=22468880

I went on the steve morse site for ships manifests (coming to ellis island)
http://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellis.html

and put in the surname of Pescatore. The majority came from Avellino. The next step I took was going back to the search form (steve morse) and taking out Pescatore and putting in the letter L and selecting "starts with" and for the town I put Avellino, then search. The only 5 letter names starting with L (and fitting your other criteria) are

Laudi
Launi

Now...........I'm not saying that for sure the surname you are looking for is from Avellino, I used it because the majority seem to have come from there. So you may want to play around with the steve morse site a bit. And just so you know, Avellino is the name of a town within the province of Avellino.

Town of Avellino, province: Avellino - region: Campania

Italy is broken into regions, each region is made up of provinces, each province is made up of towns.

Here are a few links that you might find helpful

1. Map of the regions of Italy
http://www.italiantourism.com/regions.html

2. Provinces of Italy
http://en.comuni-italiani.it/

Once you select a province you will see a list of towns in that province. I don't know how much help I've been but this will give you an idea of how to search. Maybe your mom or grandparents can help you with some additional information and you can keep us updated. Make sure to post back to this thread instead of starting a new thread.

Some questions you might want to ask.......what year your father was born and if born in the USA or Italy......your dads parents names (first and last), what year born, where born, etc. This information might help us in the search.

Take care and please keep us updated.

Since no one else has asked, I will: How in the world did you come up with the information that you already have? Did you find a name tag which had been cut into individual letters or something?

It was in a small box - looks to be a braclet or something like that.

The L is intact but the other letters had fallen off. One of them (the one that I believe is a consanant is too faded).

How do you know the consonant was last? You would have so many more possibilities if the consonant was the 2nd or 3rd letter.

Sorry I was not clear enough before. :?

When I said the last letter was a consanant - I did not mean it is the 'last' letter of the name. I meant that there is one more letter and it is a consanant. The placement of all but the L is still in question.

I know that the first name started with L the rest is guess work.

Thanks for everyones responses it is helping. :D

Do you know with certainty that it is a name that you are seeking? After all, it is not unusual in modern times for people to wear bracelets with expressions such as "Peace" or "Live Strong".

Just a thought...
