Unfortunately I don't have much info
They had to come before 1905 since my Grandfather was born in Raritan, NJ 1905.
The Ellis Island records may have some missing manifests.
My other Great Grandparents Moscariello were married in NY 1905
And I can only find them comming back from Italy 1912. They went back for a visit. I can't find when they came originally.
Thanks Susan,

Found some things that might help.

There are two towns in Italy where both the names De Matteis and Braca occur that I could find: One is Napoli, postal code 80100, and the other is Giulianova, postal code 64021, in Teramo (TE) Abruzzo. They might both occur in other towns, but these are the two where I did find both names.

Also: And they were very difficult to find.
Indexed under the name Mattler??
Mattes, Tony, age 41, arrived 1892 (?) naturalized in 1900, born Italy
-------, Vincenza, age 37, arrived in 1897, naturalized, born Italy
-------, Michael, age 15, born NJ
-------, Henry, age 12, born NJ
-------, John, age 10, born NJ
-------, Mary, age 8, born NJ
-------, Angelina, age 3 years 2 months, born NJ
This is ED 137, page 17A Living at Anderson Street

Now, I found a couple of pages later:
Matteis, James, age 36, arrived 1900, naturalized 1906, born Italy
--------, Julia, age 34, arrived 1902, naturalized, born Italy
--------, Mary, age 11, born NJ
--------, Michael, age 9, born NJ
--------, James, age 5, born NJ
--------, Theresa, age 2 years, 11 monts, born NJ
This is ED 137, page 18B living on 1st street

living next door to James, is
Michael Matteis, age 67, born Italy, arrived in 1898
Mary, age 60, born Italy, arrived in 1898

Then I found this in the 1910 census:
John A. Matteis, age 29, born Italy, arrived 1895
Jennie, age 27, born Italy, arrived 1895
Michael, age 5, born NJ
Enrico, age 3, born NJ
John, age 11 months, born NJ

So, it would appear that Antonio may well be named Giovanni Antonio or Giovantonio. Also, he would have been very young to come by himself in 1891...so chances are he came in the 1895 as listed in the 1910 census (it is also closer to the event in terms of time, so more likely to be accurate then the listing in the 1920 census.)

If Vincenza came that year, she probably came with her parents...she was even younger and no girl of that age would travel without help. However, she may have been included under the name of her mother...and her mother would not travel under the name Braca...but rather under her legal Italian name, which was her maiden name. So unless you know her mother's maiden name, you might not be able to find it as of yet...not enough information.

I am fairly sure that the older Michael is the father to both Tony and James. There could be more children a well. Both Tony (John) and James were naturalized. These naturalizations, along with their declaration of intent papers filled out prior to the naturalization process, could give you info on the home town they came from, the ship the arrived on and the date of arrival. At least it could be a great clue to all of that info....so I think I would attempt to get copies of these first.

Hope this will help in your search....

Wow, Thank you so much. These are definitely my people.
My great grandmother Vincenza was called "Jennie" and I know she was only 14 when she got married. And I knew there was a James that was a cousin. This is a great help and I really appreciate the research.

God Bless

to Essgee, just wanted to thank you again. Thanks to your info, I found a Michele Matteis traveling with his son Antonio on the Patria , May of 1896.
They were from what looks like Casavatore and their ages were 42 and 16 which coincide with the census info you provided. So at least now I have a town in Italy to research! Many Thanks again,

Mike B

On closer look at manifest there is definitely an "l" in the name.
You seem very knowledgeable on locations.
I have a document from my Grandmother that says her father(Rafaelle Moscariello) was born on the Rue del Monde, Angri.
I can't find anything at all about Rue del Monde.
Have you ever heard of it?

Thanks Mike B

I am glad to learn you found the name of their town of origin...

On this particular town above...Angri... Suanj might know more...but is there a chance that "Rue de Monde" is a street? This is a French name for "Street of the World" and since you state he was born "on" it reads like a street address and not a town......

Once again, congrats on finding him. I believe the Family History Library might well have the records for Castelvetere sul Calore: www.familysearch.org

In this case, I believe it is Castelvetere sul Calore in Avellino. If you look at the other Matteis who arrived from Ellis Island, those from Castelvetere have either Avellino written with it or a reference to sul Calore.

Good Luck in your search..............

Hi Mike, are in Angri(salerno province) an area called "Porta del Monte" that means ancient Mount's Door...in ancient past the Italian towns they were encircled from high walls... in order to defend itself from the attacks of the enemies... these Wall were opened alone in some points with of Doors exactly... the Doors was called with names second the direction.. north, south, or other, or MOUNT since are an Mount in this area.. I think Via Del Monte are an little street in Angri ancient village(not modern town)
near Porta del Monte...(Door's Mount).. also your Rua del Monde
it could be the modern Via Monte Taccaro, and also today living Moscariello persons http://paginebianche.virgilio.it/pb/cer ... ri&x=0&y=0
for Castelvetere are in Campania region:
-Castelvetere In Val Fortore in Benevento (BN) province
-Castelvetere Sul Calore in Avellino (AV) province

Thank you for posting this info. Henry A. Matteis is my grandfather and I was wondering about his family tree. I was just in Raritan, NJ last week and visited the cemetery. I took photos of the Matteis grave markers. I had trouble finding my grandfather, but was able to find his uncle and some cousins.

Mike B. I think we are second cousins or something of that sort as our grandfathers were brothers.
