Looking for Salminas

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

patkell wrote:Grandfather's Mother: Amelia Salmina (very little is known about her). My grandpa said she was born in and had family around San Luis Obispo, California. He also knew that she was 100% Italian and the ancestry was linked back to Sicily. I found a record of an Amelia Salmina staying at an orphanage in Santa Barbara, California around 1930 but I'm unsure if it is her or not. Was not able to find a birth certificate for her or for Howard Kelley (Kelly).
This is an interesting thread. I have a Salmina on an extended family line. My Great Uncle Karl Smith married a Katherine Salmina in Clearlake, Lake County, California around 1917. She grew up in that area. On the 1910 census, the parents list Switzerland as their birthplace.
A quick search at FamiySearch shows 8 Salminas arrived from Switzerland between 1870-1891, and 18 more between 1892-1910 at Ellis Island. Two from 1906 show residence as "San Luiz Obispo", Cal: Salmina, Paolo and Salmina, Sabbina. In addition, there is a younger Paolo that arrived in 1904. Links to manifests:

Paola in 1904:

Sabbina in 1906:

Would be curious to see if there's any distant family connection.

Emilio Salmina moved from San Luiz Obispo and on 1920 census the family was in Santa Barbara ... the children maybe was born here.... now to find the Birth record can help to descover other infos abt Amelia.. I am pretty sure that is the right family... the oldest daughter was 8 old on 1920, so she was born around 1911/1912.... I found a Birth record abt
Name Mary Jean Salmina
Event Type Birth
Event Date 15 Aug 1932
Event Place Santa Barbara, California, United States
Gender Female
Mother's Name Salmina

and the Death:
Mary J Salmina
California Death Index
from California Death Index
Name Mary J Salmina
Event Type Death
Event Date 16 Aug 1932
Event Place , Santa Barbara, California, United States
Gender Female
Age 0
Birth Year (Estimated) 1932
Certificate Number 45434
I believe that she was the daughter of Mary Salmina... she was unmarried at this time... I wish to search also the 1930 census abt Mary salmina, maybe we can understand what happened to this family and why almost 2 children was in 2 different orphanages...

Here Mary Salmina on 1930 census:

Mary Salmina

United States Census, 1930
Name Mary Salmina
Event Type Census
Event Date 1930
Event Place Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, California, United States
Gender Female
Age 18
Marital Status Single
Race White
Race (Original) White
Relationship to Head of Household Servant
Relationship to Head of Household (Original) Servant
Birth Year (Estimated) 1912
Birthplace California
Father's Birthplace California
Mother's Birthplace Switzerland
Sheet Letter B
Sheet Number 21

Household

Role

Gender

Age

Birthplace

John B Cunnane Head M 66 Indiana
Alice N Cunnane Wife F 63 Illinois
John Cunnane Grandson M 9 California
Mary Salmina Servant F 18 California

so making a resume on 1920 census the children was 3: Mary, Zena/Lena and Emilio jr.
On 1930 census the children of Emilio and Ida Salmina was: Mary, Lena and Amelia. Mary was servant in Cunnane family. Lena and Amelia was inmates in two different orphanages.. so I think that on 1920 census Emilio jr was really Emilia or Amelia.... daughter and no son,
and most probably the right Amelia Salmina that we are searching for...
