I was wondering about the Don And Donna that they put before their names. Are those titles like sir and Mrs?

Christine

Very happy to help, Christine. You were on the right track. I just did it differently this time.

So with the titles of “Don” (Lord) and Donna (Lady), (which sometimes indicated noble birth), they were also often given to people of high social standing in a town. This may have been because of wealth, education, political position etc. (e.g. people such as property owners, priests, doctors, lawyers etc). The use of Signor and Signora, which we also see in your records, would also be a title of respect but maybe not always to the same degree.
