the notification records are valuable!
It took me years before it dawned on me. My immigrant great-grandfather's maternal grandmother, Maria Casaletto, died in Potenza (PZ) and the death record didn't provide much because the declarants didn't know much. I knew my immigrant great-grandfather's mother was born 1 October 1846 in Potenza ...

church records
There is a movement afoot to press the Catholic Church to open the parish registers to genealogy research. These records started in the 1500's but don't figure you'll be able to trace your ancestry that far back.

Re: What’s the trick to deciphering this stuff?
Start with the most recent ones. If it's a small town, consider doing the whole town, starting with the most recent marriages and you will adjust as you go back, year after year. The marriages will have the framework on which to add the births and deaths.

Birth dates from Latin baptismal records
1.) Be aware that FamilySearch.org is run by the Mormons, and they call the Catholic sacrament "christening" to distinguish it from full-immersion baptism which is baptising a living person into the Mormon Church, or which a living person performs in a Mormon temple on behalf of a deceased person ...

Is one of them a processetto?
I'm doing a big compilation of the Castelcivita records and that includes many processetti.

Castelcivita (Salerno) and Potenza (Potenza)
I have been tracing my roots and I put a ton of material on my website at http://genealogy.bio (for Potenza PZ) and http://genealogy.bio/Castelcivita/castelcivita.html (for Castelcivita, Salerno) including my own lines and other local lines. For such a small town, a lot of Castelcivitesi emigrated ...

Use nonsolocap.it
Use nonsolocap.it ("Not only postal codes.it") to look up current names. If you know the province, use beniculturali.it For example, if you are looking for Castelluccia, go to http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/?q=gallery and find Salerno, which brings you to http://www.antenati.san ...

Don't forget the family's records. If his child married in Italy, they would say figlio or figlia di, and the father, and where he is living. I've seen USA cities.

Re: Need Help: Patierno, Lotito, Marinaccio, Viggiano
A lot of Lotito and Lo Tito names are in Potenza-the-city, and I am related to some of them because Rocco Vincenzo ARCIERI married Angiola Maria LO TITO on 9 Feb 1831 in Potenza-the-city.

Search all possible records of your ancestor and his/her siblings, too.
If he had a niece who got married and the marriage record, church or civil, mentions her father's birthplace, giving the exact town, remember that all the siblings were probably born in the same town.
Could it be Castelcivita ...
