I followed up on the marriage annotation on Biagio's 1884 birth record:

1913 Marriage of Biagio Mazzurco, son of Giovanni Mazzurco and “Gaetana” Caprone
with Filomena Arena daughter of deceased Antonino Arena and Alfonsa Lamartina:
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 14/LazWBdR
“Gaetana” fits with the name given on Giagio’s birth record.

AngelaGrace56 wrote: 05 Mar 2024, 06:02 Thanks for reposting the birth record. The town was much clearer on it as was the year. I've located the online record which is much clearer. We really need to find Giovanni and Martina/Gaetana's wedding record to be sure that we do have the correct people. The marriage record would include the names of the parents and there might even be more information pertaining to Martina's earlier life among the allegati. I began looking for their marriage record the other day in the town of Regalbuto but unfortunately there are no indices in the years just before 1864 when Vita was born, so it would be a case of going page by page which will take a while.

Birth No 29: Giovanne Manzurco

Registered 24 June 1845, in Catenanuova

Appearing was Antonino Manzurco, 39 yo, villico (tenant farmer) living in this town who presented a baby boy born from Vita Cardaci, his legitimate wife, a 26 yo, living with him, and from himself the declarant, details as above. The baby was born on 23 June, current year at 4 am in the house that they lived. The infant was given the name Giovanne Manzurco. He was baptised the same number.

Hello Angela,

Thank you so, so much for all of this. This is wonderful! I truly appreciate all that you are doing to help me.

I will look through my folders to see if there was anything from FamilySearch regarding the weddings of my great-great-great grandparents.

Please, take your time, whenever you are able to get to it, I am so very grateful for it.

Warmest regards always, Lucy

You are very welcome. I've just been rereading through this topic and I've noticed a couple of typos with my dates. Sorry. I think you would've realised what I meant though. I've had small children here with me today so have only just turned on my computer. Let me know whether you have Antonino M and Vita Cardaci's marriage record, otherwise I'll take a look for it which should bring you back to your grgrgreats. Because Martina Caprone was a child of unknown parents, we won't be able to go back further there.

Hello Angela,

I totally understand what it is like having small children around :), when my grandchildren come here, I keep the computer off, and only answer the phone if it one of my kids...everyone else goes to voice mail or email. :D

I do not have Antonino M & Vita Cardaci's marriage record.

I am wondering if my great-grandmother Vita & great-grandfather Salvatore named one of their sons after her father Antonino. My eldest cousin remembers my GGmother always talking about her Antonino, and my mother spoke of her losing her son Tony.

Warmest regards, Lucy

Thanks for letting me know. I'll look for Antonino and Vita Cardaci's marriage record in Catenanuova where Giovanni was born, for starters. The marriage generally took place in the bride's home town and we don't know where she was born. There are other records I can look at to determine her place of birth though.

It is quite possible that Giovanni and Martina had a son they named Antonino after Giovanni's father.

1873 Birth No 263 of Antonino Mazzurco, son of Giovanni (Mazzurco) and Gaetana “Capraro”

Born 27 July 1873, Regalbuto

Father: Giovanni Mazzurco, son of deceased “Antino”, 27 yo (c.1846), living this town.

Mother: Gaetana “Caprara”, 26 yo (c.1847), daughter of unknown parents.
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 99/5K6DGP3
Page 166 of 296

You mentioned that you thought he may have died in WW1. I checked but didn’t see an Antonino Mazzurco in the fallen military list.

1870 Birth No 322 – Antonina Mazzurco of Giovanni
Born Regalbuto

Father Giovanni Mazzurco, peasant/farmer, 25 yo, son of deceased Antonino.
Mother: Martina Caprone, 23 yo, daughter of unknown parents, wife of Giovanni Mazzurco

Baby girl born Strada Piazza on 2 September 1870 at 4 pm
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 96/LmoJMXK
(Page 179 of 273)

1867 Birth No 263 of Antonina Mazzurco

Baby Girl Born Regalbuto (Strada sotto la Piazza, no number) on 11 November 1867 7 pm

Father: Giovanni Mazzurco, 22 yo son of Antonino (still living so this gives a clear time range of when he died)

Mother: Martina Caprina, 20 yo, daughter of unknown parents,
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 93/LyrRlpW
Starts Page 167 of 208

This little girl must have died some time before 1870, and I’m wondering whether 1873 Antonina also died but maybe not. (It may have been this/these little girls that were being grieved?)

I've located the supporting documents (aka Allegati or Processetti) that I mentioned. These ones are absolutely amazing. They begin here with a oopy of the Promise to Marry and Church Marriage:
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 87/Ly9YlGK Page 65 of 193

and then the following documents are included:

Extract of 1821 Birth of Vita Cardaci:
Born 3 January 1821 to Rosario Cardici and Prospera Sattia. https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 87/LpW8DyZ
(Right Side of Page 66)

Extract of 1804 Baptism of Antonino Maria Mazzurco:
This is in Latin so if you want you can post it as a Latin document to our translations section.
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 87/0AkEeRD
(Right side Page 67 of 193)

Extract of 1783 Death of Antonino Mazzurco (Paternal Grandfather of the Groom):
Also in Latin so post as a Latin document to translations section. Unfortunately it doesn’t give the name of his parents to bring you back yet another generation. This would be your five times great.
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 87/w9PkqQl
(Right side Page 68 of 193)

Extract of 1836 Death of Rosario Cardici (Father of the Bride)
His parents - the deceased Giuseppe and the deceased Vita Privitera. Died and born in Catenannuova. Died 6 November 1836 at age 66. Agricoltore – farmer.
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 87/wlmlWNm
(Page 69 of 193)

Extract of 1837 Death Extract No 28 of Carmelo Mazzurco Father of the Groom:
Died 2 September 1837, 60 yo, bracciale (day labourer), with Cholera???? (Died as a result of Cholera???) Place of birth – looks like Centorbi/Centorli? Parents: deceased Antonino, a day labourer, and the mother’s name was unknown. (If no one sees my question marks (i.e. my cry for help) just post record to translations asking for the name of the birth town and did he die of Cholera. I’ll look for the original as well as it might be clearer there and you can post that as well.
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 87/0nWN7jl
(Page 70 of 193)

1840 Death (No 34) Extract of Carmela Grasso First Wife of Antonino Mazzurco
Died 11 June 1840, 35 yo, wife of Antonino, Mazzurco, daughter of deceased Gaetano Grasso and deceased Rosalia Panebianco Born and died in Catennanova.
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 87/LoJE3QN

1793 Death Record of Giuseppe Cardaci (Paternal Grandfather of Bride
So this is in Latin. You can post it to our translations section and one of our brilliant Latin translators will help.

Original 1837 Death of Carmelo Mazzurco: https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 72/5xA4EMa
Page 17 of 41

You can keep this one for your records as the original is always better than the Extracts which sometimes have errors in them. There is another word before Cholera but I don't know the word. Don't worry about posting this one I'll post it myself as I'm curious as to what it says.

Edit to Add: I can see from this original death record that Carmelo was born in "this town" so born in Catenanuova. I don't know what the clerk who copied the information to the extract was thinking.

Lucy,

mmogno has confirmed that Carmelo had died of suspected cholera and that in 1837 there was a cholera epidemic in that area.

Lucy, are you able to confirm that your Vita Mazzurco was born c.1864 and not c.1888 because I’ve located a Vita Mazzurco born in 1888. She was also the daughter of a Giovanni Mazzurco and a Gaetana Caprone 40 yo (c.1848). I’ve been trying to work out the Martina/Gaetana thing. From the children that I’ve located, it looks like she called herself Martina until 1873 when Antonino was born. Were there any other children born to Martina/Gaetana where she called herself Martina.

Also I didn’t see a Salvatore Caprone born in 1876, but Giuseppa was born January 1876.

Just want to make sure we have the correct people. (You did say that your Vita was married 19 August 1882 so the 1864 Vita makes sense there.)

Vita Mazzurco born 1888: https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 78/wWRl9Md

In case you don't have Giuseppe Mazzurco's 1876 birth record: https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 14/wQzjQjz

(This is like the never ending story....) :)

Hello Angela,

I love this: This is like the never ending story....) :), I feel the same way :) <3

Would you be able to direct me as to where on this site I can find the translations section so that I can translate the Latin document?

This is what I have from when my great-grandmother Vita came here from Italy with my grandmother and other children. She was 46 in 1912. I believe, from doing the math, she would've been born in 1866.
First Name : Vita
Last Name : Mazzurca Carosia
Nationality : Italy, Italian
Last Place of Residence : Valgussnera, Italy
Date of Arrival : January 13th, 1912
Age at Arrival : 46y
Gender : Female
Marital Status : Married
Ship of Travel : Oceania (1909)
Port of Departure : Napoli
Manifest Line Number : 0021

I'm just hoping that I can find my grandfather, Cristofaro Rizzo's brothers & sisters. He was B:13 Feb 1880 Carapepa, Valguarnera Caropepe, Enna, Sicilia, Italy; D:11 1959 Englewood, Bergen, New Jersey, USA
I do have a photo of him with his siblings that was my mother's. It has a few names on it, I believe.

Again, you are phenomenal at this.

Warmest regards,
Lucy
