Re: A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE
Thanks for your response. My husband posted the note to you yesterday and has turned the task over to me as it appears to be quite a challenge requiring time. I will let you know if I have any success. We are at the very beginning of the process, and may have some questions for you along the way ...

Re: A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE
Carmine, you're right, sometimes the obvious solution is overlooked when one is needlessly looking for something more complicated. In my case, though, I actually learned of my birth mother's whereabouts only two years after her death, and in this way I was able to get a copy of the the death ...

Re: A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE
Thanks for asking. Unfortunately I'm still working at it. It took over a year before I got an answer from the Sulmona town hall, and their suggestion was to go to the US Consulate in Milano to get an affidavit saying that the person on the two birth certificates is one and the same. This week I ...

Re: Pictures circa 1900
I am trying to find pictures of Raiano, Sulmona and Ali (Superiori, not Terme) circa 1900. Does anyone know where I can find a good bit of them? I have searched Google and have had limited success. :) I am trying to find pictures of where my Great-Grandparents on both sides lived (I know I won't ...

The pieces now start rolling in. I just received MY Estratto Di Nascita by fax from Sulmona!!!!!

Re: Information on Great-Grandparents from Sulmona
I've found all this very interesting, not least because I also had family that came from Sulmona. All the contributors have done fantastic work.
I would like to add my two cents to the discussion on Pasqua Santini/Anna Capotoli. First, most likely the name Capotoli should be Capitoli (this is the ...

Digital GS number?
I'm using the Family Search Pilot to find some marriage records and I can see results that refer to the Film number and the Digital GS number. Does anybody know what they refer to?
In particular I have found two records for a suspected bride and groom that have the same Film and Digital GS numbers ...

Re: CHIESA MADRE DI SULMONA
Indeed, you are right. I visited the cathedral San Panfilo and spoke to the parish priest when I was there. He did confirm that the cathedral was also referred to as Chiesa Madre by the locals.

Re: A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE
johnny and Destin,
Thank you both for your replies. I am certain what the State of NJ will be sending me is in fact what would be called a "true" copy. I believe it will have a red stamp across the front saying "FOR INFORMATION ONLY -- NOT FOR LEGAL PURPOSES" or some wording to that effect, and on ...

A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE
I have a problem that at the very least is rare. I suspect it is even unique and, worst of all, I fear that it might be irresolvable. I am stuck between the proverbial rock and hard place, in my case caught between the laws of two different governments: the State of NJ and the Republic of Italy.

Re: 12 months? is USCIS my ONLY option?
You do NOT need to provide a death certificate. I obtained mine for a grandfather without one, so I can't see why proof of deceased would be necessary for a great-grandfather.
You just need to provide sufficient factual information to enable the searchers to locate the record!

Re: letter translation
The "atto di nascita" (birth act) can be requested either of two ways, either as an "estratto" (extract) or as a "copia integrale" (a full copy). They are both authenticated with the official stamp of the "Stato Civile" of the comune.

Re: TOMBSTONE NAME CUSTOM
Luke, that would have been my guess too, that, being listed first, LA VELLA was the husband's surname, while BALASSONE was the wife's. The only thing that had caused me to doubt this was the positionig of the photos above the names, which showed the wife's photo to the left of her husbands.

I almost forgot, you and your brothers can do it together, and should for obvious reasons.
