As I'd previously thought my GM was born in Italy, I hadn't bothered to search much about her parents (they WERE born in Italy). But my GM was actually born in Connecticut. Her parents came over from Italy in the 1890s.

Re: DNA Land
FWIW, DNA Land also imputes data and is considered to be not as accurate as 23andme, etc., according to the genetics dorks on reddit :)
It's fun to get super-specific results and things that say you're 0.5% something unexpected, but those results aren't as accurate as the main sites and do contain ...

Re: Should I bother getting tested?
GEDmatch is much more confusing than other sites. When it says "80% xxx" that doesn't actually translate into 80% of "xxx". Using the Eurogenes tests on GEDmatch, for instance, you need to then get your coordinates and view where they cross on the given "map." That's my understanding, at least ...

Not as "Italian" as we thought
So...my 100% Italian father is, at most, about 25% Italian, according to 23andme results--and that's assuming all of his "broadly" categories are Italian, which isn't likely. Technically, he came back as 16% Italian. While I'm definitely his biological son, 23andme says I'm 1.8% Italian. (Says my ...

How's the process been going?
So you're looking to get citizenship through your GGF? Did any naturalization take place along the way that would disqualify you from citizenship?

Re: Dual citizenship help
mier, do you have a link where I can learn more about this shortened period of living in Italy to gain citizenship? My paternal grandparents were both born in Italy, but my grandfather became naturalized in the U.S. shortly before my father was born. I'd love to learn more about the shortened ...

suanj,
Actually, San Germano is Cassino.
The town was known as San Germano from roughly 949-1863, but has been called by its earlier name, Cassino, since then.

Italysearcher,
How do you recommend getting records from Roccasecca if I do have dates? Specifically, my great grandmother, Assunta Maria Ricci (or Maria Assunta Ricci) was born in "Roccasecca, Caprile" Aug. 28, 1883.

I'd love to learn about the parents and/or grandparents of Pietro Pinchera (born 1873) and Assunta Ricci (born 1883). They're my great grandparents and originally from Cassino.

Re: Am I SOL?
PM sent--any help is greatly appreciated!
I'm quite certain the naturalization index hit is for my GF: it includes his full name, birth year and is associated with the right state.
There appears to be a match for my GGF as well--for 1940.

Am I SOL?
I suspect I know the answer, but I'd like to throw this scenario out to the pros here.
I searched ancestry.com for my paternal grandfather (born in Italy in 1909, the family moved to the U.S. the same year) and got a hit for a U.S. Naturalization index with his name from 1939. Years ago, I used the ...
