Surname morphology
Can anyone shine any light on surnames that have similar (or identical) pronunciations but differ greatly in spelling..? Just as an example: The surnames Maceri, Moceri, Mauceri, Misseri, Macari and Massari. Is it possible that at least some (if not all) of these can have a common root but morphed ...

Re: Shared DNA
Can these DNA tests estimate how much DNA you've inherited from each grandparent? Would it require a DNA test for your grandparent too? If so, would a DNA test for a parent help? In my case, there's no one from either generation alive, but I'm curious for others sake.
Yes, it would require DNA ...

Re: Shared DNA
Well, first of all, there is a slight fallacy in your example. DNA is ONLY inherited equally from parents -- after that it gets muddy. There are possible instances where a grandchild might not receive ANY DNA from a specific grandparent due to random replication (ie: a GC might get approx 1/3 from 3 ...

Re: Division on Navy Record
I expect this to be the last in a series of Navy records to decipher.
Enlisted in and re-enlisted where 2nd Fl or F1 Division.
Is that FL for Florida or F1 for something else?
Any thoughts?
I believe it stands for "Naval District Florida". It may likely be the base in Pensacola, my ...

Re: Seaman's Certificate
I'm trying to understand the middle section of this document under "Proofs Submitted". I read "Discharged U.S. Naval Hospital League Island PA, Dec 11/29". What does the writing above mean? Is it a reference to someone else, or does it refer to the applicant?
My guess it was his ship's admiral ...

Re: Sicllians in Rome late 1800s - where in Rome would they go?
I see the match to you when I lower to 3cms but it doesn't come up with any match to your cousin for me.
I wonder if the match we have is just identical by decent or if we have a shared ancestor from the 1600s or something.
Could be anything. My Ancestry makeups all show distant Sicilian, so ...

Re: Sicllians in Rome late 1800s - where in Rome would they go?
My kit is LG1484509 , looks like no match.
I dropped the threshold to 3cM, and came up with a match of almost 152 cM's to yours, so it appears there may be some distant relationships.
With the same threshold and using my cousin's kit, I get a 262 cM match to you -- even closer (mind you her ...

Re: Sicllians in Rome late 1800s - where in Rome would they go?
Oh lol.
I think there was a migration wave to there in the 1870s-1880s too - that seems to be when mine immigrated. Mine are from Agrigento too! But also from Palmero. Thats assuming I'm correct on being related to my ggf and that I don't actually have a break in my line where my grandmas father ...

Re: Eugene and Virginia - name commonality?
Thats interesting. I never heard of Virginia being spelled Verginia. Do you think they meant to spell it that way, or just didn't know correct spelling?
In the commune records it's spelled both ways (there are quite a few), but much more commonly with the 'e'. I believe that is the correct ...

Re: Sicllians in Rome late 1800s - where in Rome would they go?
My other advice would be to consult a California psychic.
lol what?
I think it's a backhanded reference to me (LOL). I spar with the 'dark one' often on here. I have more recent Roman roots (albeit not Rome itself) and much deeper Sicilian ones. I have not made a direct connection yet ...

Re: Eugene and Virginia - name commonality?
My 3GGM's first name was Verginia (with an "e"). She was born in 1790. I don't know her birthplace, but she died in Valmontone (Lazio) in 1875...

My grandparent's marriage was "arranged" by the families. They were married in 1922 -- my grandfather had been in the US for 12 years (my grandmother was 7 when he emigrated) & he was already a US citizen...

Ragu from the northern part of the peninsula contains carrots. Never seen them in any relatives or friend's sauces (Ragu or otherwise) from Rome-south.
