Thank you Marty, Erudita, and Livio. I will now use the methods you showed me to find more records - hopefully I will find Enrico's and Agata's birth (nati) records in/near Messina. They are stored locally - but perhaps they have been further located at a more provinical level. I will try whatever.

Here are the records for the town of Messina. The allegati records are of foundlings and different births that are not the normal registration. The problem with the Messina records is some years were destroyed during the earthquakes so they ask people to re-register at the town hall so some years are screwy

I guess it's good news - someone found him. I finally realized that they have indexes of the names of both the normal and foundlings - thank you for the link! It will be very diificult to find who his father and mother were, perhaps impossible!

So perhaps I will try to find Agata's birth record.

That is not Agata Grasso if you look back at the posted birth record I send Agata was 23 at the time of Carmelo's birth in 1899
You need to be searching in the Messina nati not in the Allegati di nascita here is the link
