Post by molan »

Hi, please help us (Paula Musciotto) read a Marriage record from Geraci Siculo. The online record is blocked except at the family history center.

It is the 1834 Marriage of Antonio Valenza & Maria Puccio #14 - 1 Jun 1834 ?.

Please include the streets of residence for the Bride & Groom.

I've attached a copy of the record.
Thanks
Gary

Thank you so very much Tessa. Your detailed transcription is so very much appreciated. I'll have to go searching for the Allegati now as the LDS copy of the civil records for this town only start in 1820.

It's not just the LDS copies. Civil records only started being kept in Sicily in 1820.

It looks more like Mursia to me, but could be Murgia. I note that the letter looks different from the middle g in Giugno in the same document, but that isn't that significant, since it is not unusual to see the same letter written more than one way in the same document.

However, in Geraci Siculo now one finds Murgia and not Mursia. In Sicily the name Murgia predominates now, except in a few places, such as Biancavilla, where one finds mainly Mursia.

Thanks for your feedback, Carubia. It's great having people on the forum, like yourself, who have researched particular areas so well, and have such a good general knowledge as well. I'm still with Murgia. I've had a quick look at the indices available on line and have seen no evidence of the surname Mursia, in the town, specifically in the mid to late 1800's. Not sure whether you may have? Also looking again at this record, I can't see any letters "s" that look similar, although I know that often the same letters can vary within a document anyways?

Hopefully there will be another record that can verify the correct name.

Angela :)

Thank you Angela & Carubia. I've been thru these index's and the name Murgia is very common. I haven't seen a Mursia yet.
Thanks
