Where was my GGF from 1907-1918? JS appt. next week!

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Where was my GGF from 1907-1918? JS appt. next week!

Post by kmdefever »

Hello!

My mother has a citizenship jure sanguinis appointment in Detroit next week and she is still struggling through Form 4, in which she lists all the cities her grandfather has lived in since the age of 18.

His name was Joseph Faruolo, sometimes misspelled Farnolo.
B. 1889, Savoia di Lucania, PZ
D. 1959 Grosse Pointe, MI, USA

From 1919 until his death in 1959, he lived in either Detroit or St. Clair Shores, Michigan. We have census data to back that up. Easy!

However, prior to that, we have very little idea where he lived. Atlantic Highlands, NJ has come up for his brother Rocco, whom he joined after emigrating in 1904. Since the consulate only requires Joseph's whereabouts from age 18 on, she just needs the period between 1907 and 1918, when he left to serve in France during WWI.

Could someone please help us find the info we seek? I make delicious ricciarelli for the holidays and would gladly send you a box with my thanks. :-)

cheers-

I believe the consulate requires this information primarily to determine that all locations were searched for missing naturalization records. If you already have naturalization documents for this ancestor, his location after he arrived in the US and before he naturalized is less of a concern. If he joined his brother in NJ, he likely lived in NJ at least for a short while. Do his military records provide any information?

so maybe on 1906 he still was in New York ..

something don't match... because the son stated to be born in NY, instead on 1920 census resulting born in Michigan, and that match.... on 1917 Joseph was in Detroit, and ditto on 1920:
Joseph Faruolo
United States Census, 1920
Name Joseph Faruolo
Event Type Census
Event Date 1920
Event Place Detroit Ward 21, Wayne, Michigan, United States
Gender Male
Age 30
Marital Status Married
Race White
Race (Original) White
Can Read Yes
Can Write Yes
Relationship to Head of Household Head
Relationship to Head of Household (Original) Head
Own or Rent Rent
Birth Year (Estimated) 1890
Birthplace Italy
Immigration Year 1903
Father's Birthplace Italy
Mother's Birthplace Italy
Sheet Letter A
Sheet Number 29
Household
Role
Sex
Age
Birthplace
Joseph Faruolo Head M 30 Italy
Helen Faruolo Wife F 25 West Virginia
Mary Faruolo Daughter F 2 Michigan
Joseph Faruolo Son M 0 Michigan
Iver Valentine Lodger M 25 Sweden
so from 1905 (in NY) to 1917/1920 (in MI) where he was I cannot find it on 1910 census....

Thanks, mler and suanj.

Yes, suanj. You are right about the discrepancy. The 1920 census lists my GF's birthplace as Michigan, when it was really NYC. My GGM lived in New York while my GGF was serving in France in 1918-1919. They married in Buffalo a couple months after my GF's birth and returned to Michigan.

We are still not certain exactly when-- between 1905 and 1917--my GGF left his brother in NY/NJ and came to Michigan. Hopefully the consular officer won't make too big a deal out of that. We have his naturalization certificate from 1930 and, if what mler says is true, those early years should be a non-issue.

Thanks again!
