Handwriting of key document for my family research

Post by cgammaro »

Hi all,

I need assistance to translate the following document, I think there might be something hidden here that can guide me in the right direction.

Record Number 9, Salvatore Gammaro, my great great grandfather died in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Thanks in advance,

What are you hoping to learn that "can guide you in the right direction"? Are you looking for his birth/parents or a spouse?

The Brazilian death record says that his son Domenico reported his death on 18 May 1895 and that Salvatore was 40 years old.

You can look for his birth around 1855 in San Lucido but will need to be at a FHC to use FamilySearch for those years. Not sure if they are on Antenati. It's not responding again.
Places: Jaci, Palazzolo Acreide, Pedara, Trecastagni
Names: Fisichella, Gangemi, Miano, Moscuzza, Smriglio, Torrisi, Valvo

Actually I need to confirm if it clearly say that Maria Carolina SAMMARCO was Domenico mother, because I know she was married to Salvatore and that Salvatore was his father.

What I really need in fact is to find out where Domenico’s birth was registered, Maria Carolina SAMMARCO and Salvatore GAMMARO married her in 1879, so Domenico was supposed to be born around that year but I haven’t found anything in San Lucido records related to his birth.

It is a mistery why Salvatore 34 and Domenico 10 traveled to Brazil in 1888 and left her behind, and that 7 years later she was in the comune reporting her husband death.

If both Salvatore and Maria Carolina were San Lucido citizens where is the birth cert? Does the document say she was divorced?

Does the document clearly say they were San Lucido residents? That she was Domenico mother? That she was still living in the city at that time?

Hi Tessa78,

Thanks for replying. I think this is the best document I have to assist me in that direction, the one you found which I asked help for translation. I think we may have a hidden clue but for me is too difficult because of the handwriting and language.

At that time this is what you gave me:

Appearing before the official was Carolina Sammarco, 39, daughter of Francesco, and wife of Salvatore Gammaro, with a notarized death notice from Brazil of the death of her husband, Salvatore Gammaro, age 40, on 18 May 1895.

Appearing on 18 May 1895 was Domenico Gambaro (later this is referenced as Gammaro) to petition a registration of death for his father Salvatore Gambaro (recte) Gammaro, age 40, Italian, spouse of Carolina Sammarco Gambaro. The declarant, age 18, testified that he was a "vittima di gastro-lupatite" as attested to by Dr. Felizaido Cavalheino(sp?) , and was buried in the cemetery of this city.
Domenico was an only son, and that his father died in January of that year.

Thank you,
Cesar
