Naming convention of certificates

Post by delfgill »

Hi,

Does anyone know whether the comma between names indicates first and middle, or middle and first?
For example: Maria, Rosa. Is Maria the first name or middle name?

I’ve also come across discrepancies in the age listed for parents on sibling certificates.

My g-grandmother born 1876: father 46; mother 35
My g-grandmother’s sister born 1873: father 36; mother 27

Any tips on how to determine the correct age? With so many identical names and limited records, I’m finding it difficult to figure out which Tommaso is the father.

Suggestions greatly appreciated!

Do you have a link we can look at for these births? I have found in my research for family that Maria is first. But it seems many go by , in your case Rosa.
As for ages of parents, unfortunately you never know until you find a birth record for them.
Or a marriage record, that probably would list the closest age for them.

My family referred to my g-grandmother as Giuseppa, and were surprised to hear that she had a middle name. Here are links to the birth certificates:

I thought I had found birth information for their father Tommaso but upon further review of the documents I noticed the inconsistency in his age (and their mother’s) on the attached certificates. I’m now wondering if I have the correct Tommaso! I haven't been successful yet in finding the marriage record for Tommaso and Maria Aurelia.

Thanks again!

The child's name is Maria Giuseppa Nigro. Many are given the first name Maria and are then called by their second name (because there are so many Maria)...

On the line in the document with the child's given name it reads "Maria Giuseppa" with no comma :)

I have not yet located the birth act of Tommaso, but for the approximate year of birth (1845-1847) for Maria Aurelia di Rago, there are 2 birth acts. Perhaps one of them is the mother of Maria Giuseppa...
Do have any knowledge of the names of parents of Maria Aurelia di Rago?

I believe that the child born in July is more likely to be the mother of Maria Aurelia di Rago [Nigro] as her mother's name is Eleonora Maria Miraglia, the same given name as the daughter born to her in 1873.

July 1845 (NOTE: the second page of this birth act is missing)

September 1845

+++EDIT TO ADD

Did the couple have any sons? In the 1838 birth for Tommaso, his father is Ettore.
In the 1836 birth for Tommaso, his father is Francesco.

POSSIBLE birth act of Tommaso Nigro:

September 1836
