Requesting help with Partinico ancestry
Hello!
I had hired someone to order the birth certificate of my great-grandmother, Stefana Simoncini (b. 1879?), from Partinico. Attached you will find null results document - they looked over many years and couldn't find her. He did find her brother's baptism record (also attached). There is an 11 year gap between the two births, which the person I hired said was very unusual for the time. In the brother's baptism record, it refers to Stefana as the daughter of father Giuseppe Simoncini (rather than as sister, or child of both parents). Translation of baptism record is:
"I ... Giovanni Cici, assistant ... of this ... church of the city of Partinico, baptised an infant ... born of Giuseppe Simoncini and Rosa Arusa ... upon whom was imposed the name of Carlo. The godparents were Mariano Lombardo [and] Stefana Simoncini, the daughter of the aforesaid Giuseppe."
This has made me think that perhaps that while Giuseppe was her father, Rosa Agrusa was not her biological mother. Rosa's entire family line is from Partinico, but I can't find anything about Giuseppe Simoncini. So, I'm looking to see if Rosa and Giuseppe were married in Partinico (~1877?). If so, perhaps the marriage certificate will tell me who his parents were and where he was from. Then I may be able to dig backwards and find my great-grandmother's birth certificate in another town.
Does anyone have access to marriage records in Partinico? Or others ideas on how to reseach this?
Thanks so very much!

Translation of baptism record is: " ... born of Giuseppe Simoncini and Rosa Arusa spouses (jug[ali]bus) ..."

Thank you for the translation help.
If anyone can help with the marriage records or other information about the Simoncini side, I would really appreciate it. I need to find my great-grandmother's birth certificate. Thanks!

Re: Requesting help with Partinico ancestry
I checked the church marriage indices in Partinico (Maria Santissima Annunziata) from 1869 through 1894 and did not find a marriage for Giuseppe Simoncini and Rosa Arusa.
I also checked the baptisms from 1875 through 1879 for Stefana Simoncini with no success.
The Simoncini surname does not appear in those indices...
Here is the link if you wish to check...
https://www.familysearch.org/search/fil ... cc=2046915
Today the Simoncini surname is found in these towns in Sicily
Simoncini 124.80 Palermo Palermo
Simoncini 6.12 Monreale Palermo
Simoncini 3.12 Bagheria Palermo
Simoncini 3.06 Avola Siracusa
Simoncini 2.94 Messina Messina
Simoncini 2.71 Castelbuono Palermo
Simoncini 2.60 Castellammare del Golfo Trapani

Thank you so much! I'm really stumped now.
Would it be possible (if you are willing) to check Palermo?

Hello,
If the person you hired couldn’t find anything regarding Stefana, then things didn’t happen as you initially thought.
Meaning that she most probably was born somewhere else or before that date.
If she was present at the baptism of Carlo she could well have been older than 11 yo.
Can you provide us with more details if you got them?
For example, do you know where Rosa was born?
Have you got an idea of Giuseppe’s approximate birth?
Could we see the immigration record you mentioned in this other thread?

In the decennial birth index for Palermo 1876-1885 there is only 1 Stefania Simoncini born in 1883 but parents do not match.

Re: Requesting help with Partinico ancestry
In the international genealogical index on family search, there is a Giuseppe Simoncini born on March 26, 1849 to parents Carlo Simoncini and Stefana Scaglione. Birth in Palermo in Palermo Province. This could possibly be the Giuseppe who is father to Carlo and the Stefana in the baptism record. I've been unsuccessful though in finding any marriage record for him in Partinico. I don't know if tracking down this 1849 baptism record would help and, at least, give us a possible parish name. I don't have time through next week to search for it though. Sorry.

Well spotted Erudita.
Here it is:
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 68/wWK1kM6
Giuseppe Simoncini born in Palermo, Sezione Sant’Agata, on 26th March 1849. Baptised on the 28th.
Parents are:
Carlo, 32 yo. and Scaglione Stefania 28 yo.
It’s probably the Giuseppe we are looking for.
His mother’s name could have been passed on to his daughter.

Re: Requesting help with Partinico ancestry
Thanks for posting the link. I also found that this Giuseppe had an older brother named Giovanni after their paternal grandfather, who was a Giovanni Simoncini, who was a husband of a Margherita Giuliani. The brother Giovanni was born Feb 8, 1846 (record # 126, dated the 11th), also in the same place as Giuseppe. So, it’s possible that the Stefania born in 1883, daughter of Giovanni Simoncini and Francesca Verga, was Giuseppe’s niece, and first cousin of his daughter Stefana named in Carlo’s 1891 baptism record. Unfortunately, marriage records need to be located to confirm everything, and that’s proving difficult.Farassino wrote: 27 Sep 2024, 19:52 Well spotted Erudita.

One last thing-Carlo Simoncini and Stefana Scaglione married in sezione Sant’Agata, Palermo, Palermo, Jan 25, 1845.
There are other children of Carlo and Stefana listed on family search. Their second child was a Margherita named for her paternal grandmother. They had a number of other children.
Re: Requesting help with Partinico ancestry
Quick update
1. Stefana Simoncini arrived in the U.S. on June 12, 1901. She is listed on the passenger list as age 22, line 17, of the Liguria which had sailed from Naples. She was traveling with her grandfather, Mariano Agrusa, age 64 and their destination was to his wife, her grandmother, Angela Soresi. Her last residence is given as Partinico.
2. Rosa Agrusa was born on Dec 19, 1859 to Mariano, age 23 (his surname is d'Agrusa on her record), and his wife Angela Soresi -p.613 on antenati website
3. Stefana Simoncini married John Morone in Manhattan on Jan 6, 1902, certificate #1905. Her place of birth on the record is just given as Italy, but her mother's name is given as Rosa Arusa and her father's name is given as Giuseppe (Simoncini)

Also, in the May 1894 baptism records in Partinico (image 59 of 1144), there is a daughter named Angela Simoncini born to Giuseppe S. and Rosa Arusa (the spelling in the church records). Godparents were Mariano Lombardo and Antonina Arusa, his wife. Rosa herself arrived with children Carlo Simoncini and Angela Simoncini in 1903, I think it was. I believe their destination was to Mariano Lombardo. I'll have to go back and check that.
Sorry but I don't have time right now to pull up the links to all of the above records.

Re: Requesting help with Partinico ancestry
This forum is AMAZING! Thank you so much!
I'm attaching the record I have for Rosa Agrusa's birth as well as the record for her parents' marriage. I had assumed Partinico for Stefana's birth since that was the last location listed on her immigration/ship manifest documents. I had also used 1879 as tentative birth year for Stefana based on immigration at age 22 in year 1901.
I'm concerned about both the missing birth record of Stefana and absence of marriage record for her parents, given that it seems most family members were either from Partinico or Palermo. Also, the age difference between her and siblings Carlo and Angelina is still surprising.
I'll keep digging and appreciate any other information that this group finds.
Thanks,
Sybil

Re: Requesting help with Partinico ancestry
Quick question please - given the Simoncini family births seem to be largely in Sant'Agata and Sant'Oliva, would those be reasonable parishes to search for the marriage of Giuseppe Simoncini and Rosa Arusa?
Thanks,
Sybil

Re: Requesting help with Partinico ancestry
There is this parish whose records are not online. I can’t say it’s the correct parish though. You could try contacting someone there.
