Stumped on Tommaso Coppa / Capua / Caupa

Post by wasson23 »

Hi everyone,
I hope you have some great ideas for me. We have been researching this for YEARS and I'm so new to genealogy that I am pretty stuck.

My great grandfather came to the US in 1910, and his name was changed. However, I have some documents which list his original name as Tommaso Coppa / Capua / Caupa. He was born November 20, 1888 in Priverno Italy.

A document also states his father as Andrea, and his mother as "Griden'ta Sirsni". Please know that he could not write English, so someone was writing for him as it sounded.

I'm at a dead end with it - we don't know any of our relatives and he didn't speak of his family in Italy at all. He was a quiet man over all.

Does anyone have any ideas? I would be forever grateful.

Can you post the documents? Sometimes we can see or read something you may have missed or misread... :-)

Priverno also known as Piperno has civil records back to 1870 and the church has records back to 1600's. Since you have a birthdate I am sure the town can find the record even if the name is off slightly.

Suanj - you may be on to something! You all may be on to something!!

1) I had no idea that Priverno and Piperno were the same place - that is so helpful! I will absolutely write to the churches to find possible records.

Suanj - I have another document that lists his mother as either Gride'nta or Jacinda. As these were written by an American as he spoke, I had no idea if spelling or sound was correct.

This is getting very exciting! I wish I was as good at this as you all are!
Here is a link to the documents I have been referencing:

Amazing ideas to get me going!!

Hi,
Italysearcher, before of me,explained that the old name of Priverno was Piperno.

Jacinda is the pronounce in south italian dialect; Giacinta is the correct spelling; on the documents the surname is Cironi;

for birth certificate request you can write to:
Ufficio di stato civile
Piazza Giovanni XXIII
04015 Priverno (LT)
Italy

email: statocivile @ comune.priverno.latina.it
( NO spaces)

form letter in italian language:
http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... /index.asp

all the best,
suanj

HI everyone,
I wanted to give you a follow up - the link to your site and Certificate request form was SO HELPFUL.
I used the form you provided the link to, I wrote to the Priverno office and received such a fast response! I received his birth certificate and all of the information and "leads" you provided about his name and spelling were exactly right!!
I just wanted to stop by to say how thankful I am for your assistance! :D :D :D

Now... my next mission will be to locate the same kind of documents for his parents. I have their names now!

Thank you again!
