From Italy

Post by Max Power »

Ciao a tutti!
I'm a new arrive on Italian Genealogy, having made my registration just today.
Your site is absolutely interesting and well made. Congratulations!
As many of you, I am actually continuing a big research about my ancestors, started by my uncle and actually dating back to 1800.
However, I started founding some problems, because two of my relatives immigrated to the United States back in 1900-1910, and I am Italian currently living in Nola, Campania, Italy.
Our surname is Napolitano, but my ancestors are probably called with the family name of Napolitani, the original surname changed by a mistake in an unknown period. They were all born in Camposano, Naples, Italy.
The grandchildrens of those ancestors should live in Asbury Park, NJ, but I never met them. If somebody know "Napolitano" or "Napolitani" people in that area, or elsewhere, his help would be appreciated. In exchange, I can help you giving info about Italy and suggests about how to conduct researches in my homeland.
Unfortunately, seems that genealogic researches find more interest in the U.S. rather than in Italy, but a good research can be however done.
Thank you!

For us to help you with US research we will need some more details of your ancestors who came here.

Hello everyone and thank you for the replies.
According to my researches, three brothers of my grand grandfather have immigrated to the United States.
Their names are:
Mario Napolitano, born in Camposano, NA, Italy on May 9, 1881
Gregorio Napolitano, born in Camposano, NA, Italy on August 9, 1879
Francesco Napolitano, born in Camposano, NA, Italy on November 23, 1883
Their descendants should currently live all in Asbury Park, New Jersey, but I don't know them personally. I just know that my father's cousin, deceased in 2008, had been in Asbury Park to them in 1976.
I hope we can find other informations.

Prego! :D

I will look, but I must tell you that I found many death notices while I searched. :(
I tried to focus only on someone still living with whom you could make contact.

I will go back to look for more information about Gregorio's family.

Ok, Tessa, many thanks to you!
However I would let you see this info I found on Familysearch.com.

He is the elder brother of Frank, and seems that there is an error in the name.

Yes, I have found some information about Gregorio Napolitani, and the arrival agrees with the manifest you found...

US Passport Application, dated 13 August 1912
Gregorio is living in Queens, NY at 78 Webster Ave.
He was naturalized as a US Citizen on 6 October 1911 at Long Island City, NY
States that he arrived 7 April 1903 on SS Balilla

Right side of image...
No additional pages (or photo) found :(

Image

ALSO FOUND...
a possible second manifest for Gregorio in 1906.
Arriving on SS Nord America 10 November 1906
Age 27, leaving Camposano and going to uncle Vincenzo Tortora (a carpenter) at 87 Webster Ave., Long Island City, NY

Image

AND in 1910, I think this is Gregorio living with Vincenzo Tortora in Queens, NY on the 1910 US Census.
He is working as a confectioner (candymaker) in his own shop...

Image

I found a possible marriage in 1914, but you would have to request the record (for a fee) from the NYC Vital Records office. Not sure if it would help your search for living relatives...

From NYC Marriage Index:
Napolitani Gregorio 26 May 1914 - Bronx certificate #1480

Can request online at this site...
