Lorenze (Lawrence) & Amelia (Emilia) Castiglioni - LUCCA

I was pointed to this website from a post I made on the genealogy section of Craiglist. I am a paid user of Ancestry.com and have been at a dead end road in my Italian ancestry search. The following family is who I am searching for, and am wondering if anyone may have any clues or tips:

Several brothers that came to America have listed their parents as Lorenzo (Lawerence) & Amelia (Emilia) Castiglioni. Amelia has been noted to have a maiden name of Quilici.

Notations as to Residence in Italy have been Lammari and Lucca.

The siblings are Angelo born about 1875, Louis born about 1885, Domenick born about 1886, Michael (Michele) born about 1890, Silvio born about 1900, Lawrence (no birth history) and a possible sister named Teresa (no birth record).

Angelo immigrated somewhere prior to 1900. Louis around 1902, Domenick around 1903, Michael around 1907, Silvio around 1923. Lawrence is noted to never have immigrated, and the possible sister is noted in Angelo's obituary in 1951 in Butte, Montana as living in Chicagao with a married name of Tambellini.

Most all of the brothers ended up working in the mines in Butte, Montana. Michael is my great grandfather and passed away in 1987.

Louis is said to have never married, but I do have a Louis that was reportedly married for a short time in California who does seem to fit the rest of the family as living in Montana as well.

I apologize that I can't speak and/or write Italian, so I am hoping that someone may recognize this family from their ancestry research.

Hi, and thank you for the welcome. I'm sorry that I just now saw all your posts. I have to also apologize that I wasn't very clear in my request. However, you are correct in all that you have posted, but where I am stuck is beyond all the brothers, from the parents, Lorenzo and Amelia, and upward into Italy, etc.

First of all, I have to ask....WHERE did you get that passport photo?? I have all the other stuff that you so graciously posted for me, but have never seen the passport for Angelo.

Angelo is the one that has thrown a kink in the discovery to Italy. You are right, he does list his father as Domenick and his mother (on a marriage license I have for him) as Christine. However, everything else about this individual falls right in place with the rest of my family. My mom is still alive, so she has told me as much as she can remember about the Castiglioni families in Butte, Montana. Mom was about 15 when Angelo died. Out of all the brothers in Butte, Angelo is the only one that made several trips back to Italy.

It wasn't until I saw the marriage license that the wierd 'parent' thing came into play. Everyone always heard that Lorenzo was their father. Everything else about the marriage license ties exactly in with the rest of the family. Who he married, the children they had...etc.

I am going to post a picture of the marriage license to show both the father and mother as listed by Angelo.

Something happened to my posts from yesterday, they were there last night, and now they are gone. Here is a summary of what I posted:


Angelo's Marriage License showing Dominick as his father

I also was able to find Angelo's passport application on the Ancestry website. So it looks like I have two families to search for now. Who was once thought of to all be brothers are in fact cousins. I now believe, after looking at census files, that Angelo, Louis, Theresa and possibly Lawrence are siblings from one family and that Micheal, Dominick and Silvio are Siblings from another family.

I think you're headed in the right direction with two families

Although it is not impossible, it is uncommon for siblings (Angelo B. 1875 - Silvio B. 1900) to be 25 years apart

Searching for more arrival manifests for each of the siblings/cousins may provide more clues...

For instance (and you might already have this )
Silvio's arrival in 1923 shows him leaving father Lorenzo in Lammari and going to brother Michele in Meaderville, Montana (147 Mott St.)

Yes, I do have Silvio's manifest, and you are right, it never occurred to me about the age difference. I have been going on what has been told to me by family, and all the assumptions everyone 'thought'. I may be slow, but I do finally catch on All part of the learning process I guess
