I am looking for any information regarding the Barbalaci Family. My mother's name was Margaret Dominica Barbalaci and my grandmother's surname was Muia. I believe there were 6 siblings: Michael, Anthony, Augie, Anna, Nora, and Margaret . Their parents were immigrants from Colabria (sp) entering Ellis Island around the late 1800's. They settled in Newark, New Jersey, USA.
I know my Grandmother died after giving birth to my Mother; circa 1908. Margaret married John Anthony Mastrangelo in April 1934. Both of my parents are deceased: John Anthony died in June 1970 and Margaret died in February 1991. I am aware of only one first cousin. Our first Grandson was born 2 weeks ago and this quest is very important to my sons and myself.

Hi Evana,
Genealogy research is best done in reverse. Start by collecting the death records, then marriage and birth. Each will give you a better picture and more clues.

You don't have your location listed, but you can go to the NJ state archives and look up records yourself. Births up to 1920 and deaths up to 1940.

I belive you mean they were from Calabria. This is a region of Italy with many different towns or comunes. All records are in the town or origin so you must identify the comune.

I think the correct spelling of the surname is Barbalace. There are many is Ellis Island from Calabria with this spelling. Only one person with the spelling Barbalaci.

Thank you so much! I did find original birth , marriage,and death certificates quickly. I could not locate specific towns or comunes as you mentioned but will check the sites you offered and here is more information:

maternal: Domenica M. Barbalaci ( Barbalacci ; marriage certificate)
Birth: October 25, 1908
Death: February 2, 1991
great maternal: Marianna Muia ( Marion Murra ; marriage certificate)
great paternal : Gueseppe Barbalaci

As you can see, there are different spellings to last names as these were taken from original documents that I thought were in our safety deposit box! Guess who's taking a ride to the bank:))

This is a census from 1930, NJ, Newark. Anthony Barbalace. Would this be the Anthony, who is a brother of Margaret? If so it gives us a year of immigration.

Couldn't get the text manifest to load. It timed out.

The town he is from is listed as Cicala. Haven't found that yet. Hopefully Suanj or someone better with geography will be able to help with the correct town.

This is the manifest for Marianna Muia arriving 4-20-1899. Her destination is husband Giuseppe Barbalaci. Notice her son is on line below her. Michele, but a different last name, but destination is to father, the same as the mother. Possibly a child from a previous marriage?

Notice the numbers written in the occupation column. In 1941 he applied for something that caused them to check his manifest. Probably filed his first papers (Declaration of Intent) towards citizenship. You can write NARA to look for naturalization papers.

Or file a freedom of information request with the INS. They have a copy of all naturaliztions that occured after 1906.

A quick check on www.mapquest.com turned up two towns named Cicala in modern day Calabria.

One is in the province of Cosenza and one is in the province of Catanzaro.

I was so wrapped up with the Ellis Island site that I never checked this Forum. I cannot believe how fast many of you found more information, while I was spending hours searching for Marianna Muia. Yes Antony Barbalaci was my Mother's brother but I have to reread the information you sent to me.

There is microfilm for the town of Cicala. However the film is limited to 1809-1861. You can order and rent the film for about $3.50 a roll depending on your location.
