Does anyone have any ideas on where in Italy this surname might come from? I am not sure where to start looking for my great grandmother's side of the family.

It's a common surname throughout Italy so you won't be able to narrow it down based on the surname alone. But in Italian it means someone from the Puglia region of Italy.

T- thank you so much for wanting to help...I have tried and tried to find information on her with no luck. I do know that she married Giuseppe Scanza/Scanga in NYC in 1899 (I found that certificate online). She had 2 children Michael Scanza born in 1900 and James Scanza born in 1905 (James is my dad's father). I know her husband Giuseppe died in 1907 (I found his death cert.) in NYC and I know she died before 1920 because my grandfather James was an orphan at the age of 14. My dad said he always thought she died from the Spanish influenza so that would have been 1918 or 1919 I think, but nobody really knew for sure. I have tried to find a death cert. for her in NYC but have not been able to. This mystery is driving me crazy . Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Oh, I also know from her marriage cert. that her parents names were Vincenzo Pugliese and Antonia Bruno. I estimate her year of birth to be 1875 based on the age listed on her marriage cert.

Found a possible 1900 US Census for Marianna and Joseph (Giuseppe) Scanga/Scanza
Living in the Bronx on Morris Avenue
Married with one son, Michael, aged 5 months (DOB listed as Jan 1900)
Marianna is listed as age 25 (DOB Jan. 1874) and born in Italy, immigrated in 1899
Also living with them is Feliciana J. Jordana(Giordano?), age 50, widow, and listed as mother-in-law

maybe her first name was Anna Maria changed in Marianna/Marion in USA..

I really do appreciate everyone trying to help Yes her name was Marianna and quite possible it was changed to Maria etc...I have searched under Anna, Maria etc...I have seen the census record and do believe that is them but am confused about the mother-in-law being listed as Feliciana J. Jordana...as her marriage cert. does say mother is Antonia Bruno. The address listed for her on the marriage cert. is 567 East 149th Street and her age in 1899 was listed as 24. It makes me crazy that I can't even find a death certificate for her because I am quite sure she died in NYC. My dad always thought that she was burried in Potters Field on Hart Island. When I found her husband Giuseppe Scanza's death record I found that he is burried in Calvary Cemetery in a mass grave. I called them to see if she was there too but they said they would need a date of death in order to search...I will try the Potenza/Venosa idea. Thanks again everyone Like I said she has been such a mystery and I want so badly to find her.
