Can anyone identify the year of this photo? (warning: large)

Post by john_dominic »

I came across it recently, and it's from my mother's family's hometown, so i'd like to tell her (and see) if it is when my g-grandfather left Italy to come to America.

I was hoping some of you could be able to identify it by the police / military uniforms.

Additionally, the town is incredibly small, so it's even possible family could be in the photo.

Thanks,

John....

Actually, if you look at the style of the collars and ties on the men, it might be more helpful. Also, if the picture were smaller and you could see the entire picture at one time, it might help. The woman in the front with the shawl collar....if we could see her skirt length and style of shoes would really help....

Looks like a first communion? If so, the girls shoes speak of the 1920's...but if it a festival where people dress up in traditional clothing, could be all together different.......

John - Have you considered publishing the photo in the local newspaper to see if those in it might be identifiable by the current residents? The newspaper may even do it as a human interest story.

It was definitely taken in the 1920s, as the clothing suggests. One thing to remember though: poorer or more rural areas were behind the times in clothing styles. Therefore the time period may be later than it seems.
Do you know which person in the photograph is your great-grandfather?

It is a really great picture. I especially like the priest's tattered lace! It speaks volumes!

Ok, cool - that makes sense now.

First off, this photo is from the Comune website of where he was from.

It is impossible for him to be there, since he left in 1902 to go to America, and that is roughly 1920. He had a brother, sister and mother who stayed behind, so it's possible (I don't know how probable) they are in the photo, though.

And, the community is fairly rural. Santa Cristina Gela is 17 miles SE of Palermo, as a point of reference.

I get a kick out of the photo too - it's just so old world...

Those 3 men in uniform are "Carabinieri", and those on the right side use to wear that kind of unifom between 1910 and 1940

link this web site and at the bottom of the page you see the same hat of those on the right side of the picture

Yes, but differently from Policemen, they are not civil, Carabinieri is an Army. In fact they are involved into various UN activities all around the world. Are a special combat corp.
