1920s marriage certificate translation help
1920s marriage certificate translation help
My grandmother just gave me the original document for her parents' Italian marriage certificate dating back to the early 1920s. The original is water damaged and extremely faded so I had to modify the image as best I could so that it was more legible. Alessandro and Filomena are my great grandparents and I can spot their names on there but not much else. Would anyone be able to translate this?

Re: 1920s marriage certificate translation help
This is quite faded (water damaged) -
The name of the town (comune) is illegible - do you know where they were married?
The date looks like 13 November 1920.
Record #45 (probably Parte I, but cannot read that)
Alessandro's father is Felice and his mother is Arcangela, but I cannot read her surname (maiden name)
Filomena's surname looks like Rossi. She is the daughter of Antonio, and of Carmina Pxxxaro

The town is Ceppaloni, T. I was just going to type exactly what you did for the names. I agree with the date. BTW, I think Carmina's surname is Porcaro, which is found in that town.

Thank you both so much! Yes, this is in pretty bad condition. I'm amazed you both could read that! This has been extremely helpful, thank you again.
As a side note, i've been trying to find an online copy of their marriage certificate, and since I can see the damage that the original is in do you think my chances of finding this in the archives somewhere is possible?

Re: 1920s marriage certificate translation help
You will need to write to the comune of Ceppaloni to request a copy.
I do not believe the records for 1920 are online. I will check.
Is Alessandro's surname Testa?
Meanwhile if you choose to write:
Address:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Piazza Carmine Rossi, 1
82010 Ceppaloni (BN)
ITALY
Send no money, but DO SEND a photo ID and an email address.

Re: 1920s marriage certificate translation help
Yes, Alessandro's surname is Testa. Thank you
I may write to the commune of Squillani as well because looking at Alessandro's naturalization papers it says that's where they got married. Although I also read Ceppaloni when I looked at the marriage record. So it wouldn't hurt for me to write both, right?

Re: 1920s marriage certificate translation help
Thank you for the additional information.
I have been checking the births in Ceppaloni (from 1893 - 1900, 1894 is missing) and have not found them.
Will check Squillani as well.
Do you have approximate years of birth for them?

Here is the birth act of Filomena Rossi in 1895.lcj7894 wrote:Thank you so much, Tessa. Yes, Alessandro and Filomena were both born around 1895. Alessandro in September 5 and Filomena in February 8 (about)

Dated 10 February - birth on 8th February

Father: Antonio Rossi [son of Carmine], age 42, farmer residing in Ceppaloni
Mother: Carmina Porcaro [daughter of Domenico], age 41
Child given the name FILOMENA
Witnesses to the record: Diego Porcaro [son of deceased Mattia], 36, farmer; and Giuseppe Saccone [son of deceased Nicola], age 40, farmer.

I did not find Alessandro in 1895... and 1894 is missing.
EDIT***
I took a look at the arrival manifest (Boston) for Alessandro, Filomena and daughter Mafalda...
He lists his place of birth as "Rocca B." - which is most likely the Comune of Roccabascerana (AV) of which Squillani is a hamlet/village.
Marriage usually takes place in the birth town of the bride (Ceppaloni) - so I would definitely write to Ceppaloni for a copy of their marriage act (and the birth act of daughter Mafalda who lists her birth as Ceppaloni, as does her mother, on the arrival manifest - last column of page 2)

Oh my gosh!! That's incredible you found that, thank you so much! I notice a Diego Porcaro, would you think he could be in relation to Carmina? Perhaps a sibling?

Good to hear!
Posted an edit above.
ALSO... Diego and Carmina have different fathers listed... relationship most likely some type of cousin.

Thank you for all your help, Tessa! You've been so awesome in helping me discover more about my family. I'll definitely write to Ceppaloni and see what comes out of it.

Re: 1920s marriage certificate translation help
Hey Tessa, one quick question that's not related to the marriage record. I'm trying to find Alessandro's military record during WW1 and I have a bit of info on it like when he enlisted, when he was honorably discharged, and his serial number in the army. Would contacting Avellino be the best place to find his record?
