Borromeo family mystery
Hello, In the past this community has been really helpful to me and I'm hoping someone can help me again as I've reached an impasse.
It's no secret the Borromeo family is quite well-known in Italy. However it is some big family secret just WHY this branch of the family left the Riomaggiore in Cinque Terre. I'm very interested in getting these records as I would like to apply for an Italian passport by blood.
My great-grandfather who I need a birth record for:
Agostino Borromeo (sometimes "August") born around "June 1846" in Riomaggiore, La Spezia, Italy. I have his death record here from the County of Alameda in Oakland, CA. It says he was "about 70 years old" when he died. He was married to my great-grandmother Mary (sometimes "Maria") Borromeo née Gasparini. Maria was born "18 May 1844 Riomaggiore, La Spezia, Liguria, Italy."
Could anyone please help me locate the birth record of my great-grandfather Agostino Borromeo? I know Agostino's parents were Sebastine Borromeo (born 1817, also in Riomaggiore, La Spezia, Italy) and Mary Maddalena Pecunia (born 1821 also in Riomaggiore). And of course his parents even have a specific date for THEIR wedding (27 FEB 1843).
Something else that is strange is that despite all being devout Italian Catholics there appears to be no record of Agostino Borromeo and Maria Gasparini's marriage taking place in either California or Italy. (All of my Italian relatives have been buried in the same cemetery in Alameda since they emigrated to USA). You'll also notice Agostino appears to take the trip to a from Italy multiple times, including on 12 Dec. 1872. Very mysterious!
I appreciate your help getting to the bottom of this. Thank you so much!

Re: Borromeo family mystery
There is no real mystery here.
Riomaggiore was part of the Vatican States and there are no civil records prior to 1870. Family search has parish records from 2 churches (https://www.familysearch.org/search/cat ... 1420514-50), if you did not find your family there perhaps there were other parishes not microfilmed, or records after 1857 were not available. Some parishes in the Vatican states sent copies of baptism and marriage records to the state and it was these that were microfilmed (Note: They were filmed at the State Archives). Records from the parish itself were not accessed.
To get records for citizenship purposes you will need an official certificate from the church (not just a copy of an on line record).
There are posts on my website that will help you understand what has been filmed.

Re: Borromeo family mystery
The Comune won't issue an extract for citizenship purposes unless they hold the original record so save your self time by not writing to the Comune.
You need to write to the priest whose address can be found on www.parrocchiemap.it.

Re: Borromeo family mystery
May just be a coincidence but was looking for some other info and stumbled upon this post...My Grandfather's last name was Pecunia and he was born and lived in Riomaggiore his entire life. Best guess he was born around 1895ish...My Mom was his daughter. She was married in San Giovanni Battista church in the sixties.

Thank you so much for this Marty! I was a fool thinking these links would keep working to the different documents/records instead of at least printing out what you sent so I could locate it as needed. Going to direct message you about how to find these again.adelfio wrote: 23 Apr 2019, 15:45 Welcome to IG website here you go save you a little money on your quest if there is records at the comune level

So grateful.

The antenati website has been redesigned, so the old URL does not work.
Here is the link to the marriage that Marty
posted for you in 1843 for Sebastiano Borromeo and Maria Maddalena Pecunio.
Go to page 12 of the images.

Re: Borromeo family mystery
Hi vinoprosim - To add to your mystery, read the following article, entitled "the Brigands," at the top of the far right column of this edition of the New York Herald:
https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn ... nge&page=1
The story describes the arrival of the steamship Queen in New York on December 7, 1872. Several passengers were killed on the voyage, and some of the Italian passengers aboard the ship were described as brigands - outlaws. Others were said to be "lazzaroni," or professional beggars. Bernard Casserly, the Superintendent of the Bureau of Emigration at Castle Garden, believed many of the passengers were forced to emigrate by the Italian government.
As you mentioned, your great-grandfather, Agostino Borromeo was aboard this voyage of the Queen.
