Hi! I need a translation for the marriage record of Jacobus Marchello-Maria Galasso-Pletto on the top left page. Why does Maria have two last names? Thanks!

Marriage Record Translation
Re: Marriage Record Translation
Looks like a double surname, but I don't know if that's a common occurrence in Castellamonte Torino. I've found it in some Sicilian ancestry.

Re: Marriage Record Translation
Sometimes multiple families in the same town had the same surname and needed a way to distinguish themselves from others in the town with the same surname. One of the two surnames may have been what we in the U.S. call the "maiden" name of the mother, but this was not necessarily the case, as the one surname, while possibly from a previous generation, may have been a family surname/maiden name from several generations ago. What gets really confusing is when one of the two surnames doesn't appear in subsequent generations and one sibling, for example, uses one of the two surnames, and another sibling uses the other, or both use the double surname, but with the second surname from a different generation. This latter phenomenon even baffled a town official in one of my husband's ancestral Sicilian towns, and he was an older gentleman, close to retirement age, who was native to the town and had worked in the town all of his adult life. Unfortunately, we only had access to the civil records, and not church records, for the town, so we were limited in how far back we could go with researching the double surname and determining when, and how, it came to exist. Researching ancestry which involves double surnames can be difficult.
