How reliable is the immigration date? How do you make sure it's right?

On his WWI declaration for the draft in 1918 he is going by Vito Rossi. The document states that he is a naturalized citizen. It would be great to find the naturalization record.

Family Sources told me about the year of immigration.

Hi trevisan by the census, he arrived in USa on 1891. I believe he arrived in USA on 1890, I found one travelling with other Rossi, Eduardo (b. 1858) Pietro (1866) Angelo ( I don't remember) and Ernesto, 16 old. All in California.

Making just a short search I believe he coming from Incudine,Brescia IT but I cannot confirm because lacking the civil records on line, however the Incudine Saint Patron is S. Vito. Maybe I am wrong ..

Found this Alien Registration Index with Registration Number.
Could it be that the year of birth was transcribed incorrectly? Day and month of birth and immigration year seem correct.

Vito Rossi
in the U.S., Index to Alien Case Files,1944-2003
U.S., Index to Alien Case Files,1944-2003
Name Vito Rossi
Birth Date 21 Jul 1885
Birth Place Italy
Arrival Date 1 Jan 1891
Arrival Place Unknown Poe
Registration Number 5749968

At NARA - the A-File for Vito Rossi is not yet available online.
But there appears to be other ways to get it.

Hello, everyone! New member here, I'm a cousin to the person mentioned in the original post.

Regarding the draft card birth date: This is the only document where it says 1875. His burial records at The Italian Cemetery in San Francisco say he was born 1876, everywhere else (including census data) is consistent with a birth date of 1877 (including his marriage announcement to Laura and the birth certificate of his daughter, Marie Avellar Rosa).

The cemetery record discrepancy can be explained by his (second) wife possibly misremembering things when filling out forms. In the case of the draft card, my father (Ernesto's great grandson) believes it can be explained by the timing:

The cutoff age for getting drafted was 40 years old, and he was right at that age in 1917. He may very well have lied about his age in this instance to put him over the age where he could be called up. Due to recordkeeping at the time, there's little anyone would have been able to do to verify that he was lying.

That is some great research

"Suanj" can you post a link to where you found Ernesto's brothers, Pietro, Angelo and Eduardo with indications they are coming from Incudine, Brescia.

The Rossi arrivals, 22 april 1890 La Champagne ship, port of departure Le Havre, France, well it
don't show the birthplace,
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... AQVSL-RPQT

and Pietro and Eduardo/Edward were in San Francisco also. I just found a Pietro Rossi matching for age and name coming from Incudine but it is hard to say, maybe it is another person totally. However show me your Ernesto arrival in Boston, so I can understand better. Without the mother maiden name we cannot hel because the surname Rossi is the most popular in Italy. From north to south, anywhere. So just the maiden name of his mother can help abt the italian region of birthplace, almost the region....

He seems to change his information constantly for some unknown reason. Ernesto Victor Rossi, Vito Rossi are only two of the variations on his name. Vito Rossi is what is on his grave marker.

On his draft card, the addition of two years kept him out of the draft for WWI.

On one census record he has 1891 as the year of immigration.

San Francisco is where he lived excepted 2 years in Los Angeles

His occupation was as a barber

He married Laura Carmen Avellar who was from Portugal.

This man is a puzzle and any help sorting out the facts is greatly appreciated. Thank-you.

hi trevisan, by marriage reord of Ernesto the surname spelling is Rosa, ditto by marriage record of his daughter:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=1402856
It could be possible that the surname was Rosa and changed in Rossi?
